AKC Note: Performance Fibers (PF) is the only producer of polyester industrial filament products in the US and is therefore a vital supplier into the Berry amendment chain of products (mainly for the US military) in which the fiber has to be of US origin. The continuation of PF is very important to the success of many downstream companies supplying into military end uses. So this announcement of consolidation and closure is significant as not only a fiber producer decision, but also as a supply chain decision to many of the fabric suppliers of Berry Amendment products for the US military. The indication is that the Salisbury plant will be able to take over all the production from Moncure. The company reports that Moncure has a listed capacity of 100 million lbs and Salisbury a listed capacity of 200 million lbs. Overseas competition for PF has been intense, both at the industrial filament level and also at the finished goods level, one of the major markets for PF is the tire industry and it is reported that more than 50% of tires consumed in the US are now imported. PF states they will invest $25 million to upgrade operations at Salisbury. PF also has North American operations at Shelby, NC, Winnsboro, SC and Queretaro, Mexico.
